Traumatic Dental Injuries
Traumatic dental injuries can occur in people of all ages and activity levels. Knowing what to do when you experience dental trauma can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth.
NOTE
- Motor vehicle and bike accidents
- Sparring accidents
- Work-related mishaps
- Sports injuries
- Falls
- Fights
You may also fracture or crack a tooth by grinding your teeth, jaw clenching, or biting into something hard.
Common dental injuries include:
- Severe or lasting tooth pain
- Lost dental restorations (such as fillings or crowns)
- Damage to the soft oral tissues (tongue, cheeks, lips, gums, etc.)
- Cracked, fractured, chipped or broken teeth
- Partially or fully knocked-out teeth
- Injuries to the supporting oral structures, such as the jawbones
- Injury to the Jaw Joint
Any injury that has enough force to break or loosen teeth can permanently damage Temporomandibular joints, and associated tendons muscles or ligaments.
There are other injuries, however, that are much more subtle. The deceptive nature of these types of injuries is generally more difficult to identify because the damage is not immediately apparent. If you have pain in your jaw joints and surrounding area, you may have TMJ disorder and not know how or when the injury occurred.
Every minute matters when dental trauma has occurred, especially if a tooth was knocked out. Grasp the tooth by the chewing surfaces, rinse it off, and submerge it in a glass of milk or saline solution. Apply direct pressure with a gauze pad to minimize any bleeding. Come directly to our office, as teeth are most easily reattached within 60 minutes of being knocked out.
We offer a wide array of services to help restore your smile, including:
- Repairs for chipped teeth, including natural-looking bonding
- Solutions for tooth and enamel fractures
- Crown replacement
- Dental bridge restoration
- Root canals treatment
- Repairs for dislocated or knocked-out teeth
- Treatment of TMJ
